If there is no word for the use of allistic actors mocking autistic people, then perhaps we should make one.
The definition runs as such:
WORD, noun. The use of allistic actors to play the roles of autistic characters (though their neurotype is rarely confirmed onscreen), whose entire character development is based on an overly-exaggerated, mocking stereotype of societally-constructed ‘autistic behaviors’, or else played extensively for allistic pathos a la the ‘autistic angel’ trope. Such characters appear almost solely in heartwarming dramas, in which the allistic characters are rewarded for merely existing in the same societal sphere as autistic people, or else in FBI crime dramas, in which the autistic person is utilized as a ‘tool’ by the autistic characters. This phenomenon has been denied by both actors and showrunners, but critiqued extensively among the autistic community.
person is utilized as a ‘tool’ by the autistic characters. Shouldn’t that be allistic?
totally agree with the point btw. the number of times friends have compared me to sheldon ugh.
